Idea #004: A better journaling app

by | 5 September 2016 | ideas

For a while I have been trying different journaling applications, in search of the one app that will help me plan better and track my progress. In the previous post I mentioned the problem of goal setting, this solution I found is to be the base of the “Day by day” site and mobile app that I’m planning to build.

When is the best time to plan your day? That’s right, the night before! The very popular app “5 minute journal” let’s you journal twice a day and have you set 3 tasks to do for that day in the morning. When I journal in the morning I am in creation and reflection mode, this is not the best time for me to think up tasks to do that day. And to be honest, I should have a big list of all the things I need to do this period (day, week, month etc) and pick the best tasks to do that further that goal. Not whatever comes to mind; that’s asking for problems.

Better journaling: where do tasks come from?

In the previous post I mentioned the problem of goal setting, this solution I found is to be the base of the “Day by day” site and mobile app that I’m planning to build.

Better journaling

That is why I believe a journaling app could be better in 2 ways. If you want to keep it simple: than stick to journaling twice a day. Reflect the day and plan for the next day at night, and do the journaling and gratitude in the morning before you start with your first frog for breakfast.

But the better way is to know where you want to end up (in 20 to 30 years) and determine the strategies that will get you there. With these strategies in place, you can set the goals to accomplish these strategies. And goals can be reduced to planable tasks.

If you have a list of strategies and the goals that will help you accomplish them, you can track whether or not you are getting closer to realizing them. With every task you complete, a goal gets more done. A strategy gets accomplished and a vision is nearer to realization.

Better journaling: when do you plan your day?

The big plan (yes, one of my personal goals)

I have a very elaborate business plan for this idea, way beyond what I want to share here now, but the first stage after an MVP launch is a website with a subscription based model that helps you set the vision and strategies that lead to the goals and planable tasks – this will also include an app that let’s you reflect, journal and plan based on the vision and strategies. But a simpler one-time-purchase option is also a part of the plan, for those that just want a better journaling app and will continue setting tasks manually. But at night, when you should plan your day… 😉

Better journaling: the big plan
